Remastered in memory of Katie Hardwick 1985 – 2024
In July 2024, I was devastated to lose my dear friend, the lead model of the Wonderland series, Katie Hardwick. The news was sudden and unexpected, she passed from late stage adrenocortical cancer, an exceptionally rare form of cancer that affects only 1-2 people per million. She was 38 years old.
Although fantastical, the narrative of the Wonderland series is autobiographical. Katie’s character mirrored the ebb and flow of my experiences of grief during the creation of the project in such a poignant and deeply personal way, it simply would not have been the same without her.
The final scene in Wonderland is ‘Home’ . Originally it was my goodbye, leading Katie through the snow to discover her (my) childhood home. Throughout the project the colour yellow had symbolised her journey, but now that she is gone I felt compelled to remaster the picture in her memory.
The scene is now a goodbye for both of us. The last time I spoke to Katie she told me she would always “live on through Wonderland,” which of course broke me. So I decided to reimagine the closing moments of the story with the bright hues of Wonderland leaving with her. Step by step, the saturation dissolving in her wake, melting into a grey reality as the shimmering colours clung to her skirts, remaining with her (always) as she turns her back on the viewer for the very last time.
